Here in the Crown St Mall, we’re bringing some colour to your festive season with a collection of vibrant decorations and artworks celebrating Christmas in the Aussie Summer.
We’re calling on the community to support local businesses, and celebrate locally this season. Join your friends, family and work mates in the many world-class bars, restaurants and venues the CBD has on offer.
This year we’re taking a unique spin on the traditional Christmas tree with a vibrant creation that celebrates the Australian summer and festive season.
The Summer Tree is filled with bright yellow, green and blue to reflect the ocean, sand and greenery around Wollongong, and bright pinks and reds that reference love, hope, and a touch of traditional Christmas. In the evenings, the Summer Tree is illuminated, bringing the sculpture to life.
The tree is constructed from certified carbon neutral materials produced here in Australia.
Santa has landed in the CBD!
Visit Santa in the Santa Maze, write a letter to Santa, explore the Gingerbread house, and make memories with a Santa photo in Wollongong Central shopping centre. Santa is located outside David Jones.
Have you spotted Illawarra textile artist Virginia Settre working her way through Crown St Mall? The Creative Container and planter barrels are all decked out in their festive finery. Using reclaimed and upcycled materials, Virginia has created a 20m long textile collage that depicts the contrast between the wintery Nordic imagery that dominates Christmas time, and the bright, warm abundance of an Aussie festive season. Virginia will continue to work her way through the Mall bringing festive colour to planters and flag poles with her hand-sewn art works.
Earlier this year, we asked the young people of Wollongong and the Illawarra to reflect on their experiences in 2020, and to share images representing what’s important in their lives.
The Grateful Portrait Project is on exhibition in the Crown Street Mall and showcases 32 portraits of young people living in Wollongong, along with their response to the statement ‘I am grateful for…’.
Next time you’re in the CBD, take a moment to read the stories of our resilient youth who are encouraging everyone to celebrate the good as we move into the new year.
We're spoiled for choice here in the CBD, with over 100 restaurants, cafes and bars to choose from. Wollongong Councillor Gordon Bradbery shared his message for the community: "I encourage everyone who’s planning on celebrating Christmas locally, to consider supporting your local businesses and make the most of what your City has to offer. There’s so much to do in Wollongong and there are so many ways that you can enjoy the festive season while staying close to home."
