Steel City Strings is a Wollongong-based chamber orchestra of musicians from the Illawarra, South Coast, and Highlands. Since its inception in early 2015 as a not-for-profit incorporated association the orchestra has delighted music lovers in townships across our broader region.
Led by Conductor Luke Spicer and Artistic Director Kyle Little, the orchestra provides performing and professional development opportunities for orchestra members, as soloists and as composers.
2019 was a significant year for the orchestra, winning the APRA Art Music Award for Excellence in a Regional Area.
Steel City Strings’ biennial Celebration of Youth concert returns in 2021, showcasing some of the region’s most talented young musicians.
Young composers are a significant element of the program: From the compositions of nineteen-year-old Mozart to the premiere performance of the string orchestral work that wins the SCS Youth Composition Competition.
The teenage Mozart’s Turkish-inspired A major violin concerto will be performed by Hana Lee, recent winner of the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music Concerto Competition while Tomas Phillips will play Mozart’s achingly-beautiful clarinet concerto.
