One-of-a-kind retailers

Four CBD retailers that will surprise you.

If you spend a little time exploring, the CBD will reward you with all sorts of hidden gems. Here's three local speciality stores that are well worth finding!

1. King & Ayres Homewares

Tucked away in one of Wollongong’s original shopfronts is a self-described ‘collection of beautiful things’. King & Ayres is a collaboration between custom furniture makers Urban Timber and PCA Furniture.

Inside the unassuming building is a light and airy gallery-like collection of unique local art, homewares, bespoke timber furniture , jewellery and giftware. Artist exhibits are updated regularly so you never quite know what you'll stumble on.

2. Pony Vintage Clothing

Cupcakes, champagne, genuine service and gorgeous dresses - these are more than a few of our favourite things!

Six years after launching the Pony Vintage Clothing brand online, founder Serene Coleman has brought her delectable collection of vintage inspired clothing and accessories to the Crown St Mall.

Retro glamour, real-body sizing, and a warm charismatic welcome are waiting for you in the colourful and eclectic new store. Catch pinup hair and makeup nights during the week, and champagne and cupcakes on Saturdays.

3. Music Farmers

Girl put your records on… thanks to Music Farmers - an independent music store that specialises in vinyl records. Local music royalty Jeb Taylor and Nick Irwin have been supplying music lovers with LPs, CDs, DVDs, books, shirts and good times since 2004. And they don't have it in stock, chances are they can find it for you!

Jeb is the co-founder and co-owner of iconic Wollongong record label and management company Farmer & The Owl. The label just keeps growing – now representing artists such as Hockey Dad, Bad//Dreems, Shining Bird, The Pinheads, Bec Sandridge, Totally Unicorn and Tees. They also run the annual Yours & Owls festival.

And if that’s not enough, both Nick and Jeb DJ around the Gong in many of the local venues. Phew! Talk about musical over-achievers.

4. The Source Bulk Foods

If you’ve never experienced The Source Bulk Foods, you’re in for a (waste-free) treat! Designed to support sustainable living and healthier choices, The Source sell over 300 bulk whole foods and household products. And the big difference? It’s plastic free. Customers BYO their own bottles, containers and bags to refill, or you can borrow or purchase a container instore.

We’re big fans of the ‘buy as little or as much as you like’ concept. With a range of delicious snacks, chocolates and guilt-free vegan treats, we love being able to grab just one or two of something - rather than splashing out on a whole bag of treats. Because let's face it, if we buy a big bag, we're gonna eat it!
