Preparing for UCI – CBD Business Information

Updated: 4 August 2022

The world’s best cyclists are coming to Wollongong for the 2022 UCI Road World Championships, from 18-25 September 2022. This will be an Olympic-scale celebration for our city.

REASONS TO STAY OPEN DURING THE UCI ROAD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Wollongong 2022 anticipates more than 300,000 spectators over the eight days of racing.
The peak days will be:

• Sunday 18 September (Women Elite & Men Elite Individual Time Trials) – 50,000 people
• Saturday 24 September (Women Junior & Women Elite Road Races) – 50,000 people
• Sunday 25 September (Men Elite Road Race) – 50,000 to 75,000 people

With international coverage and an influx in visitors unlike anything Wollongong has seen, it’s a great opportunity to showcase the Wollongong CBD. It's also a great opportunity to think about how you can maximise the benefits for your business. This may include revisiting your business operating hours to consider some of the above peak visitation days.

The Wollongong Train Station will be a key pedestrian and cyclist arrival point into the Wollongong CBD. The primary paths pf travel down to the course at the foreshore include Burelli Street, the Crown Street Mall, and lower Crown Street.

BUSINESS CONSIDERATIONS

The following are some considerations for CBD businesses to plan ahead of the event:

ROAD CLOSURES & PARKING

For the safety of the community, participants and spectators, there will be temporary road closures each day of the event within and around the cyclist routes. Some roads in and around the city will be closed daily from Saturday 17th to Sunday 25th September 2022. Roads will open before and after event times each day. This will impact on street parking and parking stations on roads within the race circuits.

There will also be some changes to street parking and parking station operations outside of the race circuit area. Consider alternative modes of transport where possible or different parking spots in unaffected streets.

Looking for accessible car parking spaces? The closest accessible parking is located the 80 Church Street carpark and Wollongong Central shopping centre.

CUSTOMER INFORMATION

Plan ahead. Start talking to your customers now. Let them know where they can find information on the event and to expect delays in travel time, especially for appointment-based services. The Wollongong 2022 website is a resource for both businesses and the broader community. Visit www.wollongong2022.com.au.

GETTING TO AND FROM WORK

As a result of some road closures, travel time will be impacted during the eight-day event. Consider other modes of transport for yourself and your staff. Visit the Wollongong 2022 website for the latest information. Hint: For specific information, including interactive road maps, to assist with your planning, check course maps at www.wollongong2022.com.au/resident-information-road-closures

It’s recommended that attendees travel to the CBD by public transport during the event. There will be additional services during the event. You can contact the various transport service providers for updated schedules.

SERVICES & DELIVERIES

During road closures, services, and deliveries may have limited access to some parts of the CBD. Please plan and work with both your service providers and delivery companies where possible and make alternate arrangements, such as adjusting the deliveries to the week prior and avoiding event week.

This could include adjusting waste collection, and cash collections, to a time outside of the road closures on event days or adjusting opening hours on the major event days.

CROWN STREET MALL DELIVERIES: There will be no vehicle access to the Crown Street Mall without obtaining a vehicle permit as per the usual process. Please note that limited permits will be available during the event.
